What I find very interesting about Hannibal is that it alienates you from your own sense of self. We see the food, we think it looks delicious, then we remind ourselves that he has served someone a human being. Similarly, we find the show visually stimulating, aesthetically brilliant, until we have to remind ourselves that the most breathtaking visual images on screen are also the most disturbing.
We’re put in a position where we are constantly second guessing ourselves, and correcting ourselves, to the point where we associate visually pleasing images with a girl pierced on a stag’s antlers.
We are virtually placed in the same position as Will, who is developing an inability to dissociate himself from these violent images. As he says “I liked killing him.”
